What is relationship counseling?
Choosing a partner and staying together through life’s twists and turns is rarely simple. Be it a live in relationship or marriage, when it comes to sharing responsibilities or raising a family together, unsurprisingly all this adds to the complexity. The complexities may come in the form of instant arguments, differences in opinions, cribbing about old tiffs and others. In fact there are very few relationships that exist conflict-free. When relationship begins to falter, our health and happiness often suffers. While for many of us our first instinct is to try and work through problems alone but it can be incredibly useful to seek outside help. How? One may choose relationship counseling – a form of talk therapy designed for those in a relationship.
Relationship counseling is a form of therapy that looks to improve communication and resolve issues within an intimate relationship. The counsellor works with both individuals separately to bring about positive changes in them. And then further works with both the individuals together towards bridging the gap and strengthening their bond.
How it works?
Relationship counsellors provide a caring and supportive environment to help couples find a way through any difficulties they may be facing. Once they have made an appointment, they will receive guidance by a trained counsellor who will ask some questions about their individual history, background, about the relationship and what they hope to get out of their contact with Relate. While this counseling is ideally suited to couples attending the sessions together, but if someone’s partner is reluctant he/she can look to speak to a relationship counsellor on his/her own to begin with. The partner may join in the following sessions as well.
In regards to the techniques used, some counsellors work with the couple in the session itself; however others may even ask to carry out ‘homework’. Typically a counsellor asks the client either to do a task or discuss something specific after getting home. During the next session the couple gets the chance to talk about their homework, discuss any challenges they came up against and how the experience made them feel. The role of a relationship counsellor is to facilitate change and resolution by helping the couple communicate more effectively and reach their own conclusions under the guidance of a professional.
